'No complaints' - Pat Devlin reacts as Cabinteely suffer first defeat of the season against UCD

Cabinteely manager Pat Devlin admits that he had no qualms with his side’s three-nil defeat at home to UCD on Friday evening.

Cabo made one change from their three-one win over Longford Town for their clash against UCD on Friday night – and Devlin admits that may have been the wrong call on his end.

Mick Kelly was the only player to miss out for the game against Andy Myler’s Students after he went off injured late on against his former club on Monday evening.

“UCD deserved to win the game,” Devlin told extratime.com. “We didn’t help ourselves and I take full responsibility for the result.

“We played very well during the game away to Longford and I probably should’ve changed it up a bit.

“We had a chat about it and decided to keep it the same but it actually went from bad to worse.

“Lads were second best in the middle of the park, we should have changed things defensively and we have what we have up front.

“I’ll take full responsibility for that and take it on the chin. We were beaten on the night by the better team so that’s it, no complaints.”

A second half brace from UCD forward Yoyo Mahdy sealed the deal for the Students who took an early lead through Colm Whelan in the opening period.

And it may have been worse if it wasn’t for the efforts of Devlin’s stand-in keeper Corey Chambers who kept the score down at times.

“We were terrible tonight, and getting a man sent off in the first-half didn’t help,” the former Bray Wanderers boss added.

“I thought it was a bit harsh – a yellow card was sufficient I thought but that’s something we have to deal with.

“We didn’t deal with it too well and we were second best at that stage so that made it worse for us.

“The lads were very tired in the middle of the park and we made the subs that we thought was best. But as I said, I take full responsibility for the defeat.

“We’ll bounce back, they’re a great bunch of fellas in there and our decisions didn’t help tonight. We should have smartened it up and brought in a couple of new fresh faces.”

However, next up for Cabo and Devlin is an FAI Cup tie away to Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

The game will see the Green and White’s come up against their former captain and goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness – and Devlin will also be in opposition against his son-in-law Keith Long on the sidelines.

“It’s a different game and competition for us and we’re looking forward to it,” the 68-year-old finished.

“Hopefully we can keep all our players on the pitch and once you can do that you have a bit of a chance.”
