Shaun Williams appointed to player/coach role with Millwall
Republic of Ireland international Shaun Williams has been appointed to Millwall’s backroom staff ahead of the 2020/21 Championship season.
The Dubliner will combine his duties as part of The Lions playing squad with helping out manager Gary Rowett in a coaching role.
"From a cultural point of view, keeping Willo involved is great,” Rowett explained to the club’s website.
“He understands the players, understands the club, but also, he has a really good knowledge of the game.
“He sees the next move before a lot of other players do, and that's a good insight into what I'm hoping for from a coaching perspective.
"He won't have to do loads to start with, he'll do the odd session, sit in on meetings and feel his way into things. Predominantly, he will still be playing, but when I ask him to coach, he'll coach.
“When I need to get a different tactical perspective, I'll pick his brains and ask him about it. I think that's quite a nice combination."
The former Sporting Fingal player has made 266 appearances for Millwall since joining the club from MK Dons in January 2014.
Delighted to be given the opportunity by the Gaffer and the Club to learn and gain experience over the next season in this new role @MillwallFChttps://t.co/Gtff2NSviW
