Extra-time Bruno Fernandes penalty sees Manchester United into Europa League semis while Lukaku fires Inter through

Manchester United needed an extra-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes to see off the challenge of Kobenhavn in their Europa League quarter-final in Koln on Monday evening.

The Portuguese kept his nerve from the spot to register his 11th goal of the season as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finally brook down a fine defensive effort from the Danish champions.

Former United striker Romelu Lukaku was on the target in the evening’s other game as Internazionale beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Dusseldorf.

Goals from Nicolo Barella and Lukaku had given the Italians a two-goal lead inside the first quarter and, despite Kai Havertz pulling one back shortly afterwards, it proved enough to seal the win.

Inter took the lead with 15 minutes on the clock as midfielder Barella picked his spot wonderfully with the outside of his right boot after Lukaku had been thwarted in the area.

The Belgian striker had to wait just six minutes to get his name on the scoresheet, though, as he rolled the ball into the corner despite being hauled to the ground by Edmond Tapsoba.

Remarkably, just three minutes later Leverkusen were back in it as Havertz worked a one-two with Kevin Volland before smashing a low shot that Samir Handanovic couldn’t keep out.

The German side pushed in the second half in a game played just 37km from their city, but they could find the second and Inter progress to face the winner of Shakhtar Donetsk and Basel.

In Koln, Manchester United registered 26 shots in all, 14 of them on target, as a heroic effort from goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson and Victor Nelsson came up just short after 120 minutes.

The Swedish goalkeeper made no fewer than 13 saves on a night where the underdogs had chances to secure a famous victory.

Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial both saw goals correctly disallowed for offside in normal time but the tide turned in the fourth minute of extra time.

Martial was fouled by Andreas Bjelland after FCK had failed to clear an earlier chance and, while Johnsson went the right way, Fernandes smashed his penalty into the corner.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sevilla meet in the other quarter-final on Tuesday evening with the winner set to face the 2016-17 winners.
