Cameron McGeehan joins Belgian side K.V. Oostende from Barnsley

Former Northern Ireland Under 21 international Cameron McGeehan has moved to Belgian side K.V. Oostende from Barnsley.

The 25-year-old spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at League One club Portsmouth who reached the playoffs before being beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Oxford United in the semi-final.

McGeehan has played for Northern Ireland at U17, U19 and U21 levels. He had earned a senior call up for the tour of Central America in 2018 but had to pull out of the Panama and Costa Rica matches due to injury.

Current head coach at Oakwell Gerhard Struber did not start McGeehan, only bringing him on twice as a substitute after arriving in November.

McGeehan arrived in South Yorkshire from Luton Town in 2017 and made 68 appearances, scoring nine goals. During his three years as a Red, he also spent time on loan at Scunthorpe United.

McGeehan made it into the League One Team of the Season as he helped Barnsley to promotion in 2018/19.

Pompey were interested in bringing him back on loan for the 2020-21 campaign but the midfielder has decided to make the move to Belgium.

He is eligible to make his debut in Oostende’s opening game of the 2020/21 campaign against Beerschot Wilrijk on Monday 10 August.

Speaking to KV Oostende’s website, McGeehan said: ‘It will be the first time that I will have played outside of England so it is good to get out of my comfort zone.

“The Belgian league is the perfect platform to develop myself and I love the way of playing football.

“I know Gauthier Ganaye (chief executive) from my time in Barnsley and he convinced me to come to KVO."

Ganaye added: “I know Cameron very well from my time in Barnsley and I am delighted to welcome him here.

“He fits perfectly with the football style we want to adopt here because he already played this in Barnsley.

“He is an attacking midfielder with a lot of running ability and he can score goals as well as give assists. I am confident he will shine in the Belgian league. "

McGeehan becomes the second player from Barnsley to join the Belgians this summer as Toby Sibbick joined on a season long loan on Tuesday.
