Munster Senior Cup Final Preview: Rockmount -v- Cork City

ROCKMOUNT

Turners Cross will host the 2020 Munster Senior Cup final between Cork City and Munster Senior League side Rockmount on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 pm kick off.

Rockmount booked their place in the decider with a 1-0 win over Munster Senior League Premier Division rivals Carrigaline United.

In what was a tensely fought semi final, Cian Driscoll knocked in a second half header to send the Rockmount through.

The north-side based club have appeared in four finals in their ninety-six-year history and each time come up short.

Manager Billy Kelleher is someone who knows Rockmount’s story all too well. As manager of the club’s senior team, he has won nearly all that there is to be won in his twenty plus years in charge.

This includes the club’s first ever FAI Intermediate Cup success in 1999 and their maiden Munster Senior League Premier Division title in 2000.

He also masterminded their run to the quarter finals of the 2004 FAI Cup. That summer, the amateur side, saw passed College Corinthians, Portmarnock, and Monaghan United to play Waterford United.

They were incredible unlucky in the RSC, as the Blues came back from 2-0 down to draw the game 2-2. In the replay, Waterford won 2-1 in a fiercely contested encounter.

CORK CITY

The Rebel Army return to their home stadium just over forty-eight hours from their 1-0 defeat against Bohemians in the League of Ireland.

City will be chasing their fourth consecutive Munster Senior Cup title on Tuesday evening, a feat they have managed twice in their history.

The Rebel Army beat Munster Senior League First Division side Mayfield United 2-1 and Premier Division club Midleton 3-2 on their route to the final.

City manager Neale Fenn has said that a cup success will be sure to lift the spirits of the squad following their recently slump to bottom of the Premier Division table.

“We don’t want to lose this. There are enough negative vibes around from people already. We want to take this cup seriously and win it.”

“We will treat Rockmount with the respect that they deserve. They are in a final for a reason and we will go out there and try and win the game.”

MATCH STATS

This is the third meeting between the two teams in the final. The last two occasions were dominated by Cork City, who won 1-0 and 2-0.

The two clubs last met in the quarter finals of the 2015/16 Munster Senior Cup. That day at Bishopstown Rockmount won on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the normal time. That was a huge result for the north side club as they saw passed a City side featuring future League of Ireland winners Sean Maguire and Greg Bolger.

Douglas Hall are the last team from the Munster Senior League to win the trophy. The Hall defeated Limerick 2-1 in the 2014 final at Turners Cross, in what was their first ever major trophy in senior football.

The game will be live this evening on Fans Voice TV with commentary from Cork City legend George O’Callaghan and Red FM’s Colm O’Sullivan.
