Cork City's Charlie Fleming: 'There's no better buzz than celebrating in front of the Shed - the fans have been unreal so far even though the results haven't gone our way'

Charlie Fleming is determined to establish himself as a top-flight League of Ireland footballer. Cork City gave him that chance and over the coming months he will be keen to repay them.

“I’m enjoying every minute of it (my time at Cork City), full time football is suiting me down to the ground and I'm really enjoying the opportunity,” Fleming told extratime.ie.

“I’ve been enjoying every day to be honest, I have fit in well, obviously it’s a lot more intense than what I’m used to, but it’s exactly what I needed and it is bringing me up to the next level.”

Although his experience of lining out for City in the Premier Division has been limited to a few appearances to date because of Covid-19, Fleming has enjoyed his experience to date of lining out at Turners Cross for the Rebel Army.

“There’s no better buzz than celebrating in front of the Shed. The fans have been unreal so far even though the results haven’t gone our way.

“They clapped us off even against Rovers and were singing until the final whistle which definitely was not deserved but meant a lot. Hopefully when this is all over, we can repay them with results and big performances.”

Like everybody associated with League of Ireland football, Fleming is relishing the return to competitive action, with the Premier Division re-start pencilled in for July 31st.

“I think everyone just wants football back. It’s a tough time for everyone but I’ll be ready to go when this is over. Hopefully I can keep showing everyone what I can do and keep improving.

“My aim this year was just to play every game possible, keep putting in performances that will help the club keep progressing and climb the table as high as we can.

“I'm grateful to both (Neale) Fenn and (Joe) Gamble who gave me the opportunity and hopefully I’ve shown them so far that they’ve made a good decision.

“Working under both of them will help me to keep progressing and I just can’t wait to get back.”

Charlie Fleming made the move to Cork City after spending five years at Cobh Ramblers, where he helped them challenge for promotion and also reach the EA Sports Cup final in 2018.

And despite leaving during the off-season, it is clear that the 22-year-old has a strong appreciation for the role Ramblers played in his career.

“Ramblers will always be my hometown club and a place where I’ve so many memories.

"There were a lot of things that I’ve had to deal with and overcome there which have all benefited me.

"I can’t speak highly enough of the place and people involved. My time at Ramblers has played a big part in engraving the work ethic I have.”
