Former Irish internationals Paul Green and Joe Murphy depart Crewe and Shrewsbury respectively

Former Republic of Ireland internationals Paul Green and Joe Murphy have been released by both Crewe Alexandra and Shrewsbury Town respectively.

Green, a member of the Irish squad that went to EURO 2012, has left Crewe after they were promoted to League One on a points per game basis.

Goalkeeper Murphy, a former two-time Irish international has also left Shrewsbury, ending a brief one-year spell at the club.

In a club statement released on Wednesday, Crewe Alexandra said that they ‘would like to place on record its thanks to all players departing for their efforts & commitment during their time at Gresty Road & wish them success in their future careers’.

Green made 22 appearances for the Boys in Green from 2010 to 2014.

39-year-old Murphy, who is now heading into his 22nd year of professional football told the42.ie that he is hopeful that he can continue for another year at least.

“I’d like to keep going next year if possible,” he said. “It will be difficult with what’s happening in the world at the moment but I’m fit and I still feel good, so we’ll see what happens.”
