Diane Caldwell netted her second international goal on the stroke of half time to give the Republic of Ireland a vital lead in their Euro 2021 qualifier with Greece in Tallaght.

The SC Sand defender was ideally placed to tap home Louise Quinn’s knockdown with virtually the last kick of a half Vera Pauw’s side had dominated without making a breakthrough.

Caldwell, making her 75th appearance for her country, had the simplest of finishes after her central defensive partner Quinn had done brilliantly to knock down Katie McCabe’s floated free kick.

The captain had targeted her Arsenal teammate from a succession of set-pieces and she found the Blessington native’s head with a deep free kick to the back post.

Quinn outmuscled the Greece defender before laying it on a plate for Balbriggan defender Caldwell to slide into an empty net.

A win in Tallaght would leave Ireland six points ahead of the Greeks with four games played and just two points behind Group I leaders Germany, who have won four from four.
