Cork City's Alec Byrne: 'It is good to get the first three points - We will kick on now and get confidence from it'

John O'Shea reports from Turners Cross

Alec Byrne was the toast of Turners Cross on Friday night, with his goal helping Cork City on their way to their first victory of the 2020 Premier Division campaign.

His headed finish for the Rebel Army ensured that the Leesiders picked up a morale boosting win, after what has been a tough start to the season.

The young midfielder has come through the underage ranks at City and supporters are hoping that he will be key for Fenn this term.

Speaking at the post match press conference after the Harps clash, a very satisfied Byrne said:

“The atmosphere in the dressing room is completely different compared to the last three games. Everyone is delighted for each other and it is a good environment to be in.

“You want to come in every week and enjoy your football. So it is good to get the first three points. We will kick on now and get confidence from it.

“We are all young and hungry. We will all work for each other. There is no egos or nothing in the dressing room.

“So there is no reason why we can’t go out every Friday, give 100% and get results like get did here tonight.”

There has been a total overhaul on the playing front at City this season.

Neale Fenn is also implementing his passing style of football generally on the side.

Byrne and his Cork teammates will hope that they can continue to click and gel over the forthcoming number of weeks and months ahead.

“It is a completely new team,” adds Byrne.

“There is only about four of us there from last year.  So obviously it is going to take time to gel.

“We have been training well also, so hopefully this is the start of something.”

Next up in the Premier Division for City is a trip to Dublin to take on St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night next.

Before that, Cork are in Munster Senior Cup quarter final action in midweek. Fenn’s side take on Mayfield United, at Mayfield United’s pitch at Lotamore on Tuesday night at 7:45pm.

Meanwhile, Cork City confirmed that goalkeeper Liam Bossin has been discharged from hospital following his injury in the Finn Harps game.
