'It's been amazing - The fans have been unbelievable' - Stephen McGuinness on joining Bohemians

Andrew Dempsey reports from Dalymount Park

Bohemians goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness admits that he has enjoyed his brief spell at Dalymount Park thus far after the Gypsies secured their second win on the spin on Monday evening.

McGuinness joined his new employers from First Division Cabinteely – and somewhat unexpectedly, in the wake of James Talbot’s ankle injury, he has found himself starting their previous two games.

“It’s been amazing. The fans have been unbelievable,” the 24-year-old told extratime.ie

“Everyone, the staff, the players, the coaches – everyone – has been amazing to me since coming in. I’m delighted to be here.

“Cabo was an unbelievable place but as you said, Bohs is a massive club so I’m delighted to be here.”

And safe to say, the former Cabinteely captain has enjoyed his opening two games for the club since his move to the top-flight.

“Every time you go out – no matter who you are playing – the clean sheet is always the first thing you look for.

“It doesn’t matter who’s playing, we support each other – you’re going out to represent the whole team not just yourself.

“It was very unfortunate for James (Talbot) to get injured, and I’ve been stepping in and hopefully I keep going."

He added; “The tempo of the Premier is a big jump. You can tell, even with the first day of training I went into.

“The lads were firing the ball around at each other, but that’s the standard you must rise towards and make the jump.”

But on Monday’s win, he said; “I’m delighted with the win. To build on the win down in Waterford – winning two-nil away in very tough conditions – and then to come up against another tough team and keep another clean sheet was the foundation and with the two boys scoring it was excellent.

“It was much like it was against Waterford. They put us under a lot of pressure towards the end of the game and I thought we managed the game excellently.

“I thought we dealt with the pressure well and Paddy’s (Kirk) block off the line sums up what this team will do for each other.”

Next up for Bohs is a trip to Derry City – “We want to go up there and get three points,” he finished.

“We don’t want to just settle; we want to be at the top of the table. That’s where this team really want to be, and where they deserve to be.

“It’s a fantastic group, and we’ll go up there – play our ball and hopefully we’ll come back with the three points.”
