Forward Vinny Faherty re-joins Galway United

Galway United have announced the re-signing of Vinny Faherty less than a week before their opening game of the season against Athlone Town.

The experienced striker was United’s top scorer last season in the First Division with the 32 year old netting 6 times for The Tribesmen.

Faherty has scored 45 times for United over the course of four stints with his hometown club.

“I’m very happy to complete our squad with the re-signing of Vinny Faherty,” Galway boss Alan Murphy told the club’s website.

“He’s got a wealth of experience in the league and he’ll be huge for us in terms of building our squad, both on and off the pitch.

“Vinny has been in training with us and I’m delighted to be able to finalise his signing. He played a lot of games last season and was a very positive influence around the dressing room, he’ll bring huge experience to our young squad.

“Vinny is an identifiable player within the league and also within Galway and he’s scored some really important goals for Galway United and other clubs for several years. He gives us that goal threat and the ability to play different tactics also.”

The Galwayman is another addition to Murphy’s attacking options with Enda Curran and Mikey Place joining the club for 2020 along with Wilson Waweru who re-signed for the club during the off-season.

“I’m delighted to be back; I still feel I have a lot to offer. It’ll be tougher to get game time, but I’ve always relished the competition and I feel that competition gets the best out of me,” the striker said, speaking to the club’s website.

“It’s a very competitive squad, so hopefully we can all push each other. The idea of being involved with this group, where the ambition is to get the club back competing in the top division in the country, was one that I couldn’t turn down.

“It’s great as a Galway lad, that has been coming to the games since I was a kid, to be given the opportunity to play for the club and it’s one I don’t take for granted.”

Faherty began his League of Ireland career in 2007 when he signed for Galway United.

He would move to Inchicore for the 2010 season with St Patrick’s Athletic before departing to play for Australian side Moreland Zebras for two years.

His playing career also included stints with Limerick and Sligo Rovers as well as some time spent with Cypriot side PAEEK.

The Tribesmen begin their First Division campaign at home to Athlone Town next Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm).
