Former Lilywhite Gabriel Sava joins Warrenpoint

NIFL Premiership club Warrenpoint Town have announced the signing of former Dundalk goalkeeper Gabriel Sava.

Sava was part of the prolific Dundalk squad that won the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018, and made a number of appearances for the club under Stephen Kenny.

“I am delighted to get Gabriel on board. In addition to earlier signings he adds much needed experience to the panel,” manager Barry Gray said, speaking to the club’s website.

“It’s important that we continue to increase our options and quality levels throughout the team and we are very confident that Gabriel will help us do that.

“He will add huge competition to our goalkeeping department and I am excited about starting work with another top level pro. Gabriel’s quality is unquestionable and his desire to play and do well is so strong, which is something we have been really impressed with so far.

“I hope that his knowledge and understanding of the game can be shared with some of our younger players and in due course help them progress.”

He began his career in Italy with Lazio before moving to Ireland and after spells with Drogheda United and Bray Wanderers in 2008 and 2009 he made his senior debut for Mick Cooke’s Monaghan United in the First Division in 2010.

The goalkeeper played two seasons with the now former League of Ireland club and helped the side to promotion to the Premier Division in 2011.

He followed Mick Cooke back to Drogheda United for the 2012 season and would win the EA Sports Cup as well as play in the Europa League against Malmo over the course of two seasons with the Lillywhites.

In 2014 he made the move to Louth rivals Dundalk as the Lillywhites became a powerful force in Irish football.

The 33 year old spent four years with the club mostly as second choice goalkeeper behind Peter Cherrie and then Gary Rogers.

At the end of the 2018 season Sava returned to Bray Wanderers for the 2019 First Division campaign where the club missed out on the playoffs, a decade after his first stint with the club.

Sava looked to be set to move back to Dundalk for the 2020 League of Ireland season and played in three of their pre-season friendlies while on trial with the Premier Division champions but the return never materialised.
