Collingwood & Farquhar Cup round-up: DCU clinch first Collingwood triumph as Dublin University secure Farquhar Cup

DCU secured their first ever Collingwood Cup success thanks to a penalty shootout win over Ulster University at Dalymount Park.

The game was locked level after 120 minutes, as a shootout was required with forward Jack O’Connor netting the final, and winning spot-kick for the Glasnevin based university.

Chances were few and far between at the Phibsborough venue, as O’Connor had the best opportunity of the opening period before his effort was cleared off the line by Owen McConville.

The northern side looked stronger in midfield with Marc McKenna and Niall McGinley impressive while a couple of Craig Taylor free kicks tested DCU ‘keeper Imrich Toth but he did well to keep them out and McKenna was inches past the post with a cracking drive.

And the game slowed down considerably as the tie went on into the latter stages, and penalties were the only way either side could be separated.

And it was DCU who prevailed, with David Mugulu, Tristan Noack Hofmann, Sean McCarthy and Jack O’Connor all scoring from the spot as DCU earned their first ever Collingwood Cup at the expense of Ulster University.

Elsewhere, there was a thriller at College Park in Trinity College as Dublin University saw off Maynooth University in the Farquhar Cup decider.

Longford Town’s Callum Warfield gave Maynooth the lead, before James Woods and Shelbourne under-19 star Dylan Connolly gave the Dubliners the lead.

Woods then doubled Trinity’s advantage from a free-kick, before Raz Tajudeen halved the deficit on the hour mark.

Maynooth however levelled at the death, but they were to be thwarted on penalties – with Stephen Duran stroked the winning effort home.
