Wexford snap up former UCD under-19 Charlie Smith

First Division Wexford have confirmed the acquisition of former UCD underage star Charlie Smith.

Smith joins the Slaneysiders from the Belfield outfit, having joined the Students in 2016. While at the club, he advanced to the club’s under-19s where he was to remain.

The winger or defender previously trained with UCD’s first-team on occasion – where he was teammates with Dan Tobin, Tom Murphy and Conor Crowley – all three of whom who now with Wexford.

During his trial period at Ferrycarrig Park, he has played in the friendly defeats against Shelbourne and Waterford.

The 19-year-old Dubliner scored in Brian O’Sullivan’s side 3-1 defeat against Waterford in IT Carlow last weekend.

“It's been good, I've really enjoyed training, everyone's working hard getting ready for the season,” Smith told Wexford’s media team.

“I thought we did well on Saturday (against Waterford) and it was good to come on and get a goal at the end.

“There's a lot of competition for places, especially with wingers. I might not be the first choice winger but I'm going to work hard, put my head down and force Brian (O'Sullivan) to make a decision.”
