Galway WFC issue statement saying 'a four or five team Under-19s league is not in the best interests of our club and players'

Women’s National League side Galway WFC have issued a statement saying that ‘a four or five team Under-19s league is not in the best interests of our club and players’.

The Galway Girls had been due to enter a side into a future Under-19s Women’s underage league in 2020 – but they have since withdrawn their name from the fold.

DLR Waves are the only WNL club to publicly confirm their entry, with Galway left arguing that the current set-up is of no benefit to their club and players.

The statement read; “Galway Women’s FC believe to give our players the best chance of developing, a four or five team Under-19s league is not in the best interests of our club and players.

“We believe for this league to be beneficial to all the players, a minimum of eight teams are required to make the league work. We are totally committed to creating a pathway for our players to be the best they can be.  

“We have already agreed to sign a number of our current under-17s on dual registration forms for this season, and also agreed to sign players who would have been part of our Under-19s set up on senior forms.

“We have also offered players who have come out of our Under-17s a place to train with our senior squad this season, while allowing them to continue their development playing games at club level in the Galway and District League.

“We will look to review the situation again at the end of this coming season with a view to entering an Under-19s team next season.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused for or current or future Galway WFC players.”
