Former Mervue United schoolboy Conor Shaughnessy joins Burton on loan from Leeds

Former Mervue United schoolboy Conor Shaughnessy has joined English League One outfit Burton Albion on loan from Leeds United.

Shaughnessy spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Mansfield Town, where he made 19 appearances in all competitions.

The 23-year-old Galwegian joins Burton Albion who also have three Irish players within their ranks – with Kieran O’Hara, Stephen Quinn and John-Joe O’Toole also at the club.

Shaughnessy’s move to the Pirelli Stadium comes with an option to buy at the end of the season.

“It’s something that has been in the pipeline for a while,” said Shaughnessy of his move to the Pirelli Stadium. “I’m delighted to be here.

“I had a good chat with the manager (Nigel Clough) and I’m really looking forward to getting started with him.

“I really liked what the manager had to say, and it seems like a really good set-up here, with a good group of players.

“I’ve been playing a lot in central midfield, in the holding role. I can play centre-half as well. I like to get on the ball and play good football, pass the ball and I can head and tackle as well!

“I’ll give everything for the cause.”
