Daryl Fordyce makes Canadian return to join Valour FC

Striker Daryl Fordyce has parted company with Sligo Rovers to join Canadian Premier League outfit Valour FC.

The 33-year-old has previously played in Canada with FC Edmonton and in the States with FC Cincinnati before his one season stint with the Bit o’ Red in 2019.

Valour Coach Rob Gale spoke of happiness to have signed Fordyce shortly after the move was announced.

“Daryl brings a wealth of experience of playing in North America. He will add leadership and a proven attacking quality,” Gale told the league’s official website.

Fordyce’s new coach also revealed how the Belfast born forward had rejected offers throughout Europe to return to Canada.

“Despite offers from Europe, Daryl showed a great desire to return to Canada and we are delighted he has agreed to join Valour.”

Fordyce took to twitter on Friday afternoon to reveal he was departing Sligo while also thanking the club’s fans, staff and players for the hospitality showed to him and his family during 2019.

“It was an absolute pleasure to play for a great club with quality people and passionate fans. Thanks to the gaffer for bringing me in and treating me as a human.

“To the staff & players, thank you. Most importantly thanks for taking care of me and my family, good luck guys,” he tweeted.

Once the move was complete Fordyce revealed his happiness at returning to play his football in Canada.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity that Rob, and (assistant coach) Damian (Rocke) are providing me,” Fordyce said.

“Throughout my career I’ve never lost any enthusiasm to help my teammates wherever I’ve been. I’m so happy and thankful to be returning to Canada with my family.”

Fordyce follows Kris Twardek, who has also left Liam Buckley’s side this winter, while Romeo Parkes has also joined New Mexico United on loan for the 2020 season.
