Ireland under-21 Josh Barrett joins Bristol Rovers from Reading

League One side Bristol Rovers have announced the signing of Ireland under-21 international Josh Barrett from Reading on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who has been capped at under-21 level by the Republic of Ireland, has decided to move after struggling to break into the Reading first team.

Barrett, who made his first-team debut in 2016, only made seven appearances for Reading this season.

Bristol boss Ben Garner spoke in glowing terms about his first permanent signing: “We are delighted to welcome Josh to the football club.

“Josh is a player who will add another dimension to our squad and is someone who we have watched and scouted thoroughly ahead of the current transfer window opening.”

Writing about the move on social media, Barrett thanked his boyhood club in a lengthy post; "Just wanna say a massive thank you to Reading for the last 15 years of my life.

"So many good memories and I’ve met some of my best friends along the way. Also, a big thank you to my teammates for all their support and I wish you all the best for the future.

"And a big shoutout to all the fans who have supported me from day one. I’m excited for my next adventure now. UP THE DING."

Currently eighth in the League One table, Bristol are only being kept out of the play-off places by goal difference. Bristol, who were playing in the National League as recently as 2015, have not played in the second tier of English football since 1993.
