From Kerr's Kids to reality show Dream Team the Extratime.ie Advent Calendar 2019 has it allFri, Jan 03 2020
The ExtraTime.ie Advent Calendar 2019 was a project brought to you by our trusty ol’ ExtraTime.ie Sportscast team. The lads released a show each day from December 1st until Christmas Day with the discussions ranging from Dream Team to Christy Fagan, there is even a special chat with our big boss man Gareth Penrose.
Day 25 – A history of Extratime with Gareth Penrose
You could be forgiven for thinking Gareth Penrose was a myth rather than a legend having managed to avoid any form of audio interview since he launched the site in 2008 but finally a Christmas miracle has presented itself as he sat down with Declan Marron to bring us back to the beginning reliving some of ET’s best moments.
Day 24 – Maradona’s Argentina v League of Ireland XI
In 1980, an LOI XI travelled to Buenos Aires to take on World Cup winners Argentina and a 19 year old Diego Maradona.
Day 23 – Big Sam Allardyce at Limerick FC 91/92
Sam Allardyce – a man who would go on to manage England for the grand total of one game – arrived into Limerick in 1991 after a priest brought him to these shores not just as a manager but as a player-manager.
Day 22 – Greatest Player never to have left the LOI
This podcast was always going to be controversial for who the lads left out of this discussion and so it proved to be.
Day 21 – Ryan McBride
Ryan McBride was a Derry and LOI legend before his untimely passing 2017, a death that shocked Irish football to it’s very core.
Day 20 – The A championship
This competition may not be the most known amongst LOI fans such was its short existence. The lads discuss the merits and also the issues that were associated with such a venture in a timely debate with Shamrock Rovers B possibly making a return in 2020.
Day 19 – John Giles in the LOI
John Giles is undoubtably an Irish football legend. Working at Shamrock Rovers as a player/manager whilst also overseeing his duties in charge of the Republic of Ireland this was a man that has always been popular amongst his fan base.
Day 18 – Shamrock Rovers v Busby Babes 1957
Five months before the tragic Munich air disaster, the Busby Babes came to Dublin to take on the Hoops in the 1st Round of the European Cup.
Day 17 – LOI books for Christmas
Even after Christmas this is a must listen if you are looking to add an LOI book to your bedside table for 2020.
Day 16 – Dream Team – Shels v Harchester Utd
Presenter Declan Marron has some explaining to do as to what he was thinking on day 16 of Advent but none the less this podcast discusses how Shelbourne ended up being the stars of one of the episodes of the Sky One drama.
Day 15 – Shamrock Rovers ‘11 v Dundalk ‘16
Which team was better? Simple, that’s the question that the podcast lads try to answer in this episode.
Day 14 – UCD Team of 2009
What a team this was! Ciaran Kilduff, David McMillian, Keith Ward, Greg Bolger and many, many, many more.
Day 13 – Brian Kerr’s Ireland – Part Two
Part two of this fascinating look at one of Irish football’s “good men”
Day 12 – Brian Kerr’s Ireland – Part One
Brian Kerr is a living legend. In this chat the lads talk about the ups and downs of his time with the Irish underage teams and also whether he was given a fair shot during his time in charge with the Senior National Team.
Day 11 – The Leinster Senior Cup
Day 10 – Steve Staunton’s Ireland
Great player, horrific manager. After the events of 2019, one would point to this appointment clearly being at a time when big JD was looking to save a buck or two. It didn’t work out clearly as it failed in spectacular fashion.
Day 9 – Athlone Town v AC Milan
AC Milan rolled into town expecting an easy win, but instead Athlone probably, possibly, should have won the game….find out more by listening to this fascinating recall chat.
Day 8 – Christy Fagan
Fagan has been a clear fan favourite ever since he first set foot in the League of Ireland and in this podcast the lads discuss his career and what may lie ahead for the forward in 2020.
Day 7 – Fearon’s Athletic
This podcast is about a forgotten club and the lads chat with Colman Stanley about the journey of a club that was formed in 1936.
Day 6 – Soccer Republic
A show that really is uncertain of it’s place in the world. Changes in presenter, pundits, format, time slot have all happened on the RTE show over the past number of years.
Day 5 – John the Baptist
The best documentary ever in the history of documentary’s on FAI CEO’s. Timely after the events of 2019 and well worthy of its own podcast slot on Day number 5 of our advent calendar.
Day 4 – Carling Nations Cup 2011
The crowds were terrible for this tournament that the Aviva Stadium had the honour of hosting back in 2011, the lads discussed what happened in the tournament that nobody wanted to be a part of.
Day 3 – Paddy McCourt
The Derry Pele went from Derry to Celtic and then back to Derry in a career which brightened the lives of the many who got to see him play. Be aware one of our podcast team may have a genuine man crush on him.
Day 2 – Greatest Ever Irish Goal
This may be a strange topic to have considering how much we’ve struggled to score goals in recent years but none the less the lads give it their best shot to try and come up with their answer for which is the best of all time.
Day 1 – Anne O’Brien
Anne O’Brien is the first Irish female player to play abroad and it is her story that forms the opening day topic of the 2019 extratime.ie advent calendar.
