Former Everton goalkeeper Tom Murphy joins First Division Wexford

First Division Wexford have confirmed the acquisition of goalkeeper Tom Murphy from UCD ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Murphy joins the Ferrycarrig Park outfit after a year in the Premier Division with UCD, after he made his return home from the UK.

The 19-year-old spent two years at Goodison Park with English giants Everton, before joining Collie O’Neill’s Students ahead of the 2019 campaign.

While at the UCD Bowl, Murphy made two league appearances for the Students against both Waterford and Bohemians. He also featured in the 5-2 FAI Cup first round win over Letterkenny Rovers.

“I got a call from Brian, we had a good chat and then we met in person and he told me his plans for the season and who he's trying to get in and it's very exciting so I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it,” Murphy told Wexford’s media team.

“It's going to be all new players I'll be working with, so we'll get to know each other, get to know how we play and just go from there.

“Once we go out, we'll try and improve each week, improve as a squad, improve as individuals and give our best for the club and the fans as well, cause at the end of the day they are the ones that come out and support us win, lose or draw.

“I really can't wait, getting straight back into pre-season, meeting all the lads.

“It's not too long ago that Wexford were in the Premier Division and it's a club that does have the capabilities to get back up there so if we gel well together as a team and push ourselves, personally,

“I'd be hoping to push for promotion next season whether automatic or through the play offs. Anything can happen in this Division as we've seen over the years, it'll be an interesting season anyway.”
