Richie O'Farrell departs UCD to make Drogheda switch

First Division Drogheda United have unveiled the signing of UCD midfielder Richie O’Farrell ahead of the 2020 campaign.

O’Farrell spent the 2019 season at UCD, where the former St Patrick’s Athletic youngster made 33 appearances for the Students.

The 19-year-old scored three league goals for the Belfield outfit – as he scored a brace at home to Finn Harps to get his goalscoring account underway.

“I made the decision to join because I feel Drogheda is the best place for me to develop as a player,” the Republic of Ireland under-19 international told the Boynesiders media team.

“Last year was a great learning experience for me coming out of 19s football, but I feel ready to step into a more senior environment now and I think my style of play is suited to Drogheda.

“I spoke to Tim a couple of weeks ago and I was excited by his vision for the club and his enthusiasm about bringing young players through. Anytime I’ve spoken to him since I’ve been impressed, and I’d say that was another big factor in choosing to join.

“I can’t wait to get going next season. Personally, my main goal is to get in the team first and foremost and then go from there. It’d be great to contribute with a few goals and assists too.

“As for the team as a whole, I think the aim has to be to go a step further than last year, ideally playing an exciting style of football,” O’Farrell added.
