Carrick Rangers confirm sudden passing of defender Jerry Thompson

Carrick Rangers have confirmed that first-team player Jerry Thompson has passed away suddenly at the age of 24.

The club confirmed the tragic news following Tuesday night’s Premiership tie with Glenavon.

Thompson, who signed for the club on deadline day following a short stint with Championship side Ards, had been named player of the match three days earlier in the league win over Institute.

The full-back had been on the books with Cliftonville at underage level before going on to have spells with Larne, Donegal Celtic, Portadown and Ards before joining Carrick in August.

“Carrick Rangers Football Club is saddened by the very untimely sudden passing earlier today of our friend and player Gerard Thompson,” read the club statement.

“Gerard, or Jerry as he was more affectionately known, joined the Club earlier this season and became an instant hit with his teammates and our supporters.

“He was a larger than life character who brought a fantastic energy and commitment to our Club.

“Although he was only with us for a short time, he will be fondly remembered by everyone associated with Carrick Rangers FC.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Jerry's family and friends at this difficult and sad time.

“Rest in peace, Jerry. You will forever be a member of the Amber Army.”

Tributes to Thompson were led by Irish League players, including former Cliftonville teammate Joe Gormley, who tweeted:

He said: “If only you knew how much people loved you Jerry. Please look over your family, your little boy [and] Samantha. Thoughts [and] prayers.”
