Longford Town confirm re-signing of midfielder Jack Doherty

First Division Longford Town have confirmed the re-signing of creative midfielder Jack Doherty ahead of the 2020 campaign.

The former Ipswich Town youngster joined Longford earlier this year from Wexford, before making eight appearances for the Red and Black in the closing stages of the 2019 season.

Doherty made his second debut for Longford away to Limerick in a 3-1 defeat at the Markets Field – after returning to the club following an ill-fated 2015 with the Midlander’s.

The 25-year-old made 18 appearances for Wexford prior to making his return to City Calling Stadium (now Bishopsgate) in 2019.

While at Ferrycarrig Park, the Tipperary native scored six goals for Brian O’Sullivan’s side – striking up an impressive partnership with Danny Furlong.

Since returning to Longford in July, the attacking midfielder made eight appearances, scoring once away to Bohemians in the FAI Cup second round.

Doherty’s extra-time finish brought the tie to spot-kicks, where Longford Town were eventually outwitted by the Gypsies.

The midfielder is the 15th to re-sign with Longford ahead of the 2020 campaign, with the likes of Aodh Dervin, Lee Steacy and Dean Byrne also returning for another year in the Midlands.

Forwards Rob Manley and James English have also both joined the club from Cabinteely and Shelbourne respectively.
