Bohemians need to score in Greece as they're held to a home draw by PAOK in UEFA Youth League

Bohemians will have to score when they travel to Thessaloniki to face PAOK in their UEFA Youth League first round second leg later this month after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Dalymount Park.

Winger Jack Moylan had put Craig Sexton’s side in front early on but PAOK equalised within minutes, Antonis Gaitanidis making it 1-1 inside the opening ten minutes.

Dawson Devoy missed a penalty for the Gypsies later in the first half and the home side were made to rue a succession of missed chances as the Greek’s return home with a precious away goal.

The National League champions returned to the UEFA Youth League for the second successive season after seeing off the challenge of Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght last October.

They face Danish champions Midtjylland at the same stage last season and were narrowly beaten 4-2 on aggregate by a side who would go on to defeat Manchester United.

PAOK themselves reached the play-off round of last year’s competition before losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.

It was Bohs who had the best of the early exchanges, however, with Brandon Bermingham going close when he got on the end of a Devoy cross but he couldn’t steer his shot inside the post.

They didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, however, as Moylan cut inside from his left wing and sidefooted the ball coolly past keeper Christos Talichmanidis after six minutes.

PAOK trailed for just four minutes as Gaitanidis produced a piece of solo magic to smash the ball into the corner and level things up.

Bohs had a chance to retake the lead from the spot when Ross Tierney was upended by Thoedoros Pournaras, but his low penalty was brilliantly saved by Talichmanidis.

Bermingham and Moylan failed to hit the target with second-half efforts and sub Evan Ferguson forced a late save from the keeper with a header but PAOK held out for the draw.

Bohs travel to Greece in three weeks’ time for the return leg knowing they will need to find the net at least once to stand a chance of progression.
