FAI Women's Cup Report: TEK United 1 - 4 Wexford Youths

Dave Donnelly reports from TEK United

Holders Wexford Youths are into the semi-finals of the FAI Cup thanks to a routine 4-1 win over Dublin Premier League side TEK United in Stradbrook.

Last season’s treble winners progressed comfortably thanks to goals from Edel Kennedy, Rianna Jarrett, Lauren Kelly and Aisling Frawley.

Shauna Peare pulled one back for the home side but the National League side controlled the game and showed clinical accuracy in front of goal.

The visitors took the lead inside four minutes with the aid of a fortuitous deflection as Edel Kennedy’s shot changed direction and wrong-footed Emma O’Brien in the TEK goal.

The National League side were in full control for the first half and could have doubled their lead when Lynn Craven pulled back for Kylie Murphy, but she skied her effort from the edge of the box.

Jarrett saw a low shot well-saved by O’Brien as the visitors’ pressure continued, while Kelly volleyed wide from the Ireland striker’s cross.

Wexford doubled their lead just after the half-hour when Jarrett got her head to Ciara Rossiter’s right-wing corner and left O’Brien with no chance.

And they took a 3-0 lead into the break as Kelly found the bottom corner from the edge of the box to effectively end the tie as a contest.

TEK rallied in the second half and had their first sight of goal when Niamh Carroll intercepted in midfield, but she couldn’t find the target with her shot from the edge of the box.

Frawley made it 4-0 moments later as Wexford once again exposed TEK on the edge of the box and the midfielder picked out the corner.

The home side pulled one back just before the hour as Peare headed home Laura Donnelly’s cross and they pushed for a second.

Sub Vanessa Ogbonna and Frawley forced smart stops from O’Brien before Rebecca Dowling grazed the bar with a late header.
