Ireland striker Jonathan Afolabi named in UEFA European Under-19 Championships team of the tournament

Republic of Ireland striker Jonathan Afolabi has been named in the UEFA European Under-19 Championships team of the tournament.

The former Southampton forward, who is currently without a club after leaving the Saints at the end of last season, is the only Irishman named in the Spain-dominated selection.

Tallaght native Afolabi scored a spectacular solo goal in Ireland’s final group game win over the Czech Republic but missed the semi-final with Portugal due to suspension.

The 19-year-old watched on as Tom Mohan’s much-depleted side were overwhelmed by the Portuguese at the penultimate hurdle.

The former Shamrock Rovers and St Joseph's Boys schoolboy is unlikely to be unattached for much longer having made a significant impression at the tournament in Armenia.

La Rioja, who beat Portugal in the final to lift a record fifth title, provide six of the 11 names on the list with the remainder made up of two Frenchmen and two Portuguese.

Afolabi beat the tournament’s top scorer Goncalo Ramos, who scored a hat-trick in Ireland’s semi-final defeat to Portugal, to one of the three striking berths.

Sporting Lisbon’s Portuguese Félix Correia and Spain’s Ferrán Torres of Valencia were the two strikers chosen alongside Afolabi.

The team was selected by the UEFA technical observers Osian Roberts of Wales and Ghenadie Scurtul of Moldova.
