Former Cabinteely full-back Karl Byrne has made the move to English non-league side Boston United following a spell with fellow non-league outfit Frickley Athletic.

Byrne spent four years at Stradbrook with First Division Cabinteely before crossing the Irish Sea to make the move to England.

The 23-year-old right midfielder played at wing-back for Pat Devlin’s charges during the 2018 campaign where he made 20 league appearances.

In total, Byrne made 72 appearances for the Green and Whites, making his debut in the 2015 season away to Finn Harps as a 63rd minute substitute.

The wing-back’s final bow for Cabo came at the tail-end of the 2018 First Division campaign where he started in the 4-1 defeat away to Longford Town.

Byrne then joined Frickley Athletic in West Yorkshire, where the utility man played in the Northern Premier League.

He now joins Boston United in the National League North, the sixth highest tier of English football.

The former Cabo man joins former Sligo Rovers captain and FAI Cup winner with the Bit O’Red Richie Ryan in playing for the Pilgrims.

Ryan, now of USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive played for the York Street outfit during the 2006-07 season, where he made 13 appearances for the club.

Byrne had been on trial with Boston United prior to signing a contract with the club. During his trial period, he made headlines with a stunning strike in a pre-season win over Grimsby Town.
