League Report: Galway United 0 - 3 Shelbourne

Paul Corcoran reports from Eamonn Deacy Park

A drab game saw Galway United sink without a trace as Shelbourne defeated The Tribesmen 3-0 in Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night.

Shane Farrell opened the scoring and James English secured a brace to secure another three points for the Dublin side.

The crowd hadn’t even taken their seats when Shelbourne took the lead in this one. An horrendous mistake from Stephen Walsh when he played the ball far too short back to Kevin Horgan allowed Shane Farrell claim the ball and easily lob the onrushing goalkeeper.

It took Shelbourne just ten minutes to double their lead. Lorcan Fitzgerald delivered a lovely ball in from the corner but poor defending cost Galway once again, James English managed to take the ball onto his foot and sneak the ball past Kevin Horgan into the bottom corner.

In the 26th minute Donal Higgins was very unlucky not to pull one back for the home side. Conor Melody started the move with a great run up the wing before pulling the ball back for Higgins only for Ryan Brennan to get in the way and deflect it clear.

Just before half-time the ball was in the back of the net again for the away side. Aidan Friel raced down the right flank with the ball with Dara Costelloe unable to catch the winger. The subsequent cross went to the far side of the goal where James English was able to turn the ball into the net.

The benches were cleared, both clubs used their three subs each. Barring a reasonably good effort from Karl Moore where he nodded the ball into Kevin Horgan’s hands midway through the second half the substitutions were the primary events of interest to see out the game.

Shelbourne happily cantered home to their 8th First Division in a row to leave them five points at the top of the table as they advance towards promotion.
