Northern Ireland under-21 international Ally Roy joins Airdrie

Northern Ireland U21 International Ally Roy has joined Scottish League One side Airdrie after a recent spell with Partick Thistle.

The former Derry City and Sligo Rovers striker joins his hometown club with three U21 caps to his name after qualifying for Northern Ireland through his grandfather.

While plying his trade in the League of Ireland, Roy made 28 appearances for both Sligo Rovers and Derry City where he scored four goals throughout the season.

Since then, the 22-year-old striker joined Partick Thistle shortly after, helping the Firhill outfit to safety after a poor start to the season following relegation from the Premiership.

Speaking to airdriefc.com, Roy revealed his delight on signing for his local club; “It’s great to sign for my local club - I had offers from clubs at a higher level and in England and Ireland, but I felt that coming here was the best option at this stage in my career.

“After speaking to Stuart Millar and the gaffer, their eagerness to get me involved made it feel like the right move.

“I’m an ambitious person, and I hope I can share that with the squad, and we can push each other to get the best outcome for Airdrie. On the pitch I’m a player with a lot of pace and skill - I love to give defenders a horrible time! 

“I want to come here and score goals and push for the league title - and have a smile on my face while I do it!”

Manager Ian Murray added; “Ally is a player who’s already improved massively in his short time in the game, and we will help him to fulfil his potential.

“He’s very quick upfront, and we’re delighted he’s agreed to join us on a full-time basis.

“I’m confident Ally will be a real asset for us.”
