WNL Report: Galway WFC 2 - 6 Wexford Youths

Paul Corcoran reporting from Drom

It was goals galore for Rianna Jarrett when her side travelled to Galway on Saturday evening with the striker adding five to her tally for the season as Wexford Youths beat Galway WFC 6-2 in Drom in the Women’s National League.

Galway opened the scoring early in the first half through Elle O’Flaherty, but their lead was cancelled out within a minute as Jarrett scored her first of the evening.

The striker netted twice more in the first half to complete her hat-trick and added a further two in the second half in a stellar performance for the Republic of Ireland international.

Meabh De Búrca doubled the home side’s tally for the evening late in the second half but Lauren Dwyer rounded out the evening with the visitor’s sixth close to full-time.

Galway took the lead after a great run from O’Flaherty, the winger blazed forward and somehow managed to slot the ball past Ciamh Dollard despite shooting from a seemingly impossible angle.

Less than a minute later Jarrett had the visitors level. Lauren Dwyer played a long ball from the back to set up the striker and despite Ria McPhilbin initially saving, the striker got a second chance and netted for her first goal of the evening.

Thirty minutes later, Jarrett smashed the ball into the top of the net from a free-kick to double Wexford’s after the referee pulled Galway up for a handball outside the box.

Jarrett completed her hat-trick in first-half injury time. Dwyer supplied the setup for the second time, this time from a free-kick, and the striker flicked the ball into the net.

On the 52nd minute Jarrett scored her fourth and her second from a free-kick. Shauna Fox got called for a handball outside the box and the striker made no mistake with a lovely looping high ball finding its way over McPhilbin before nestling in the bottom left corner of the net.

Minutes later, Jarrett linked up excellently with Becky Cassin to score her fifth and final goal of the evening with a simple shot into the net after a nice ball from her teammate.

It was a quiet day for Galway in front of goal, but De Búrca managed to grab a second goal for the home side in the 83rd minute with a long range lob of the goalkeeper.

Lauren Dwyer completed the evening, and finished off an excellent performance, which included two assists, with a goal of her own. Dwyer committed to a long range lob of her own in the 88th minute and scored her side’s sixth and final goal.
