WNL Cup Preview: Wexford Youths -v- Limerick

WEXFORD YOUTHS

Wexford Youths host Limerick at Ferrycarrig Park as they aim to reach a second successive WNL Cup final (kick-off 2.30pm).

The WNL Cup was the only trophy the south-eastern side failed to land last season after scooping the league, shield and FAI Cup.

That’s something they’ll be aiming to rectify this season and what should be a fairly comfortable victory over Limerick could set up a repeat final with Peamount United.

Tom Elmes’ side reached this point courtesy of an emphatic 8-0 win over Kilkenny United, Rianna Jarrett scoring a hat-trick and Vanessa Ogbonna and Kylie Murphy two each.

“We have been missing players for the last few weeks, but we have everyone back now and everyone is fit and raring to go,” Elmes told the league’s website.

“We are well prepared and are looking forward to the game. For us this game is about continuing to build momentum.

“Winning becomes a mentality and we need to keep getting wins in order to keep the pressure on.

“We have tough games coming up, against Galway and Peamount, so we are keen not to let anything slip.”

Wexford have a full squad to choose from for the game.

LIMERICK

It’s been another difficult season for Limerick, their second since making the step up to the Women’s National League.

Dave Rooney’s side have won just won game in the league all season, and that came courtesy of a winner deep in injury time against pointless Kilkenny United.

The WNL Cup has provided some respite from a challenging league campaign, however, with the quarter-final win over Galway arguably their biggest win in senior football.

An own goal proved the difference between the sides as Limerick ran out 1-0 winners, goalkeeper Karen Connolly saving Shauna Fox’s late penalty to seal the win.
