Watch: Patrick Hoban and Michael Duffy on target as Dundalk close gap on Shamrock Rovers

Dundalk moved second in the table and cut the gap between themselves and Shamrock Rovers to four points with a 2-1 victory over the Hoops at Oriel Park on Friday night.

Patrick Hoban broke an 80-year-old goalscoring record for the club and Michael Duffy added a second after the break before Orhan Vojic pulled one back late on (read Niall Newbury's match report here.)

Hoban surpassed Joey Donnelly’s record of 69 league goals for the Lilywhites when he met Duffy’s corner with a thumping header five minutes before half time.

Duffy doubled the champions’ lead as Sean Gannon bombed past James Furlong and cut the ball back for Duffy, who took a touch before finishing smartly low into the corner.

The Derryman very nearly got a second in almost identical circumstances five minutes later but, this time, Alan Mannus got down brilliantly to save to his left-hand side.

Rovers got a route back into the game seven minutes from time as 16-year-old debutant James Furlong picked out Orhan Vojic with the outside of his left boot.

The striker kept his composure to record his first goal for the Hoops, but it was too little too late as Stephen Bradley’s side fell to a second defeat in four days.
