Limerick receive Hughes and McSweeney boost

Limerick have added two players to their squad for the 2019 season, with midfielder Jason Hughes and attacker Sean McSweeney returning to the club following spells in junior football.

27-year-old Hughes was most recently at the club in 2015. He spent the last 18 months in the Limerick District League with Ballynanty Rovers.

Debuting for Limerick at just 17, Hughes established himself as a fan favourite before spells with Athlone Town, Sligo Rovers, Dorking Wanderers and a couple of stints in junior football.

Sean McSweeney returns to club having last played during the successful first division campaign in 2016, playing seven times.

The 21-year-old boasts one senior goal, in a 2-0 win against Cabinteely, though he’d notched double digits in a half season with Regional United, also in the Limerick District League.

The Foynes native had spent time with the club’s under-19 team, working with Tommy Barrett, but was unable to become a regular during Martin Russell’s tenure.

The pair join a Limerick squad which is slowly taking shape, as Tommy Barrett looks to rebuild following relegation in 2018.

Experienced players are scarce in the squad, with Sean Russell, Shaun Kelly, Robbie Williams and now Hughes the most experienced names.
