History made as Kilkenny United win first-ever league match

They say you can't appreciate the good times until you've experienced the bad, and Kilkenny United have experienced plenty of bad days in their short history.

 

Since entering the Women's National League in 2015 – two-and-a-half seasons ago – they've lost a lot of games. 32, to be exact, in the league; their sole point an away draw to Cork City in February 2016.

 

Their sole win of any hue since entering the Women's National League was an FAI Cup win over non-league side Lakewood Athletic later the same year.

 

That's no longer the case following Sunday afternoon's 1-0 win over Galway WFC in Thomastown. Leanne Tumelty scored the goal that will go down in Kilkenny United history.

 

 



Kilkenny had given Galway a tough game the first time the sides met this season, only succumbing to an 85th-minute winner at Eamonn Deacy Park back in April.

 

Some of the defeats Kilkenny have endured have been particularly hard to take. This season alone they've lost 11-0 at home to Shelbourne and 9-0 at Peamount United.

 

It takes a tremendous amount of dedication and determination to keep showing up for training week-in, week-out against that backdrop, so a huge amount of respect is due to all of the women.
