Blues Meet Gavin To Discuss On-Going Club Difficulties

The management committee of Waterford United have met with SSE Airtricity League Director Fran Gavin to discuss the serious difficulties the club are experiencing, the club’s current financial situation and the future of the club.

Club chairman John O’Sullivan, who has been instrumental in keeping the club afloat over the past number of season, tendered his resignation to the board last week with this weekend’s home match v Drogheda United his final as club chairman.

On Wednesday evening, the club confirmed that they had met with Fran Gavin regarding the future of the club, adding that they had made Mr Gavin and the FAI aware of the “difficult financial situation the club faces at this time”.

In their statement, the club called on the “local business and football community” to get behind and to support the club during the difficult period.

John O’Sullivan’s resignation is seen as big blow locally, although not unexpected. O’Sullivan noted his “great sadness” as he last week signalled his intention to resign.

On the field, the Blues have slumped to three straight defeats in league and cup action, conceding seven against Cork City on Monday. Despite a good start to the league season, the Blues now sit third from bottom in the First Division table, but are just four points from the second play-off position. Manager Roddy Collins, meanwhile, continues to serve his six-match touchline ban after comments made in a newspaper column.
