Newly formed ‘Galway FC’ today confirmed that they have been invited to submit an application for a licence to the FAI for the forthcoming season.

In a statement released today the club stated that “Galway FC are pleased to confirm that they have been invited to submit a licence application by the FAI for the forthcoming 2014 League of Ireland season and that work has now commenced on preparing that application. ”

Speculation as to what will ultimately happen in Galway was somewhat cleared up when Mervue United failed in their bid to win promotion to the Premier Division leaving the path clear now for one club in Galway.

With a board comprising of members from GUST, Galway FA, Salthill Devon and Mervue United the newly formed club confirmed that they will play their home games at Eamon Deacy Park while also unveiling their sponsors, who have signed on for a three year deal.

“We are delighted to announce that the Comer Group (www.comerproperty.ie) have agreed to be primary sponsor of Galway FC for the next 3 seasons and we would like to thank the Comer Group for their support.”

The club has also set a deadline for applications for the current vacant manager’s position, applications must be submitted by Monday 11th November and should be sent to The Secretary, Galway FC, Eamonn Deacy Park, Terryland, Galway or by e-mail to galwayfc@galwayfa.ie.

Current Mervue manager Johnny Glynn looks to be a front runner for the job, but there will no doubt be significant interest in the club with the likes of Mick Cooke, Declan Devine and Roddy Collins all presently searching for a new club.

The statement concluded with a piece on the fans.

“Supporter’s involvement is a key ingredient and critical to the success and integration of this new entity in the community and Galway United Supporters Trust (GUST) continue to work with the board and the co-op subcommittee on examining the development of a cooperative structure.

Galway FC will continue to update supporters and all those with an interest in Galway football with further developments in the coming weeks.”
