Madden on standby as Ireland hit with another withdrawal

Paddy Madden has been placed on standby for the Ireland squad to face Wales after Stephen Quinn was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury.

Madden, who netted 24 goals for Yeovil last season as they won promotion to the Championship, has been rewarded for his form by Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

Quinn picked up the injury during a pre-season friendly for Hull in Germany last night and now ex-Bohemians striker Madden, who has represented Ireland at underage level, could be called upon.

The FAI have also confirmed that goalkeeper David Forde has withdrawn from the squad to face Wales in Cardiff on August 14 after undergoing surgery following a knee injury he sustained with Millwall on Saturday.

West Ham’s Stephen Henderson has been called up as a replacement and will train with the squad in Newport on Sunday.

There was more bad news for Trapattoni as Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington withdrew after picking up a knee injury during pre-season training with Norwich.

Simon Cox has also pulled out after suffering an ankle injury during Nottingham Forest’s Capital Once Cup win last night.
