Serbia sack manager Slovaljub Muslin after topping World Cup group
Published: October 30, 2017

The Serbian FA have confirmed that manager Slavoljub Muslin has been relieved of his duties despite guiding his side to a top-placed finish in qualifying for World Cup 2018.

Serbia finished ahead of the Republic of Ireland, Wales and Austria – each of whom had competed in Euro 2016 in France – but it wasn't enough to save Muslin's job.

They opened their campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Ireland but gradually asserted themselves and took control with a 1-0 win in the return game in Dublin.

The former Crvena Zvezda defender will be replaced in the short-term by his assistant Mladen Krstajic until such a time as a successor is appointed.

The Serbs hadn't been to a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when they finished bottom of a group containing Germany, Ghana and Australia.

"The FSS, headed by president Slavisa Kokeza, convened and decided to part company with Muslin by mutual consent,” read a statement issued on Monday afternoom.

“His assistant Mladen Krstajic [will take] over as the caretaker until a new head coach is appointed."

Former Crvena Zvezda defender Muslin took over ahead of qualifying for Euro 2016, in which they finished fourth in a five-team group.

That campaign was marred by crowd violence in the opening fixture at home to Albania, which was awarded to Albania, and a three point deduction.
