Watch: Sligo Rovers see off Drogheda United to move into third place

Sligo Rovers maintained their strong start to the season with a 3-1 victory over Drogheda United at the Showgrounds on Saturday night. 

The Bit O’Red have impressed so far this season, with their latest win underlining their credentials. 

A brace from Max Mata and a sensational backheel strike from substitute Wilson Waweru sealed the deal for the hosts. 

Andrew Quinn netted what proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors

“It’s a huge win,” Sligo Rovers boss John Russell told LOI TV. “We knew how difficult it was going to be and Drogheda caused us problems all last year. 

“It was the same tonight and we struggled a few times from set pieces. But the three goals we scored were brilliant and to come away with the three points is something we are delighted with.”

But it was a frustrating night for Drogs boss Kevin Doherty and his side. 

“We played really well with some really good attacking football,” he added. “It’s hard to explain. 

“The goals we conceded were poor obviously but I thought we were really good. I know we lost 3-1 and that doesn’t sound good, but we were…”
