Borussia Dortmund secures Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich
Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund has signed Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich.
The 29-year-old Austrian national team's vice-captain underwent a medical check in Dortmund and signed a contract valid through June 30, 2027.
On Tuesday, Sabitzer is set to join the BVB squad, who left for a series of friendly games in the USA on Monday.
The club's sporting director Sebastian Kehl praised the new recruit for his top-level experience and versatility in both defensive and offensive roles.
"Marcel fits the profile that we were looking for exactly: a central midfielder who will strengthen us both defensively and offensively as a box-to-box player," Kehl said.
He further added that Sabitzer, with his physical strength, immense goal threat, and influential personality, will become an important part of the team and enhance their performance in hard-fought matches.
Sabitzer brings a wealth of experience with 185 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig and Bayern, including 34 goals and 29 assists, as well as a strong record in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
He also had a stint with Manchester United in the Premier League last season, where he netted three goals in 18 appearances before succumbing to an injury.
Expressing excitement about his move, Sabitzer said, "I can hardly wait to finally join the team and wear the BVB jersey."
He appreciated the excellent talks with the Borussia Dortmund management and their ambition for the club in the coming years.
"I would like to play my part in ensuring that BVB achieve their objectives and have every reason to celebrate something special with their fans again as soon as possible," he added.
