Luton Town's season opener against Burnley deferred due to stadium renovations
Luton Town has announced the postponement of its opening home game against Burnley, which was initially scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 2023.
The club made this decision due to extensive renovations currently underway at Kenilworth Road to prepare the stadium for Premier League matches.
These updates include constructing a new stand to meet broadcasting and media standards set by the Premier League.
Although the renovation works are currently proceeding ahead of schedule, the club and the Premier League mutually agreed to postpone the match to avoid potential disruptions from unforeseen construction delays.
Gary Sweet, Chief Executive of Luton Town, stated: “The joint decision to delay this fixture is regrettable, especially given the amazing progress that continues to be made on our construction works... Although this news will be a disappointment, this will make the matchday experience even greater for fans when they do get to come back."
The club, Premier League, and Burnley FC deemed the postponement necessary to allow enough time for fans of both clubs to alter their plans. The new date for the match will be announced at the earliest convenience.
Unless Luton Town is scheduled to play at home in the second round of the Carabao Cup, their first home game of the new season will likely be against West Ham United on Friday, September 1st, at 8 pm, broadcasted live on Sky Sports.
Sweet further emphasized the club's gratitude towards the local Bury Park community for their support during the ongoing construction.
He noted that Luton Town is collaborating with the local council to keep everyone in the loop regarding developments.
In addition to ensuring the stadium's compliance with the Premier League standards, the club is introducing several non-mandatory improvements to Kenilworth Road, aimed at enhancing the matchday experience for all attendees.
These improvements include better facilities for home and away disabled supporters, broadcasters, and journalists. According to Sweet, these works are also expected to be completed in time for the rescheduled match.
