Galway United v Athlone Town falls foul of the weather but Sligo-Saints clash to go ahead

Tonight’s First Division opener between Galway United and Athlone Town has become the first game of the season to fall foul of the weather.

Heavy rain on the west coast has left the Eamonn Deacy Park surface waterlogged and unplayable, and a call was made shortly after midday by referee Mark Moynihan.

Friday night’s games between Cabinteely and Bray Wanderers at Stradbrook Park, and Wexford and UCD at Ferrycarrig Park, are scheduled to proceed as normal.

Galway will now kick off their campaign next Saturday away to Shamrock Rovers II, while Athlone will welcome Cabinteely to Lissywollen on Friday night.

A pitch inspection has also taken place at Sligo Rovers’ Showgrounds ahead of their first home game against St Patrick’s Athletic and the pitch has been passed fit to play.
