Waterford snap up former Cardiff City goalkeeper Brian Murphy

Waterford have announced the signing goalkeeper Brian Murphy from Cardiff City, ahead of the Premier Division kick-off this week.

The 36 year old returns to the League of Ireland for the first time in a decade having previously played for Bohemians between 2007 and 2009.

He began his career with Manchester City in 2000 and went on to have spells with Swansea City, Ipswich Town, Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth over the course of his career.

Murphy was also on the bench for two Republic of Ireland friendlies, against Italy in 2011 and then Serbia in 2014.

“It’s good to be here first and foremost. It’s been a long time since I’ve been home, so to be able to come back and play for Waterford in the latter stage of my career is an exciting prospect,” Murphy told the club’s website.

“I got in this morning so it was nice to get to meet all the lads today. It’s a brand new team.

“I know Rennie has been working hard behind the scenes to put a squad together. Games will prove how good or bad we really are. There’s a few new lads in, including myself, so it’ll take a bit of time for us all to get to know each other.

“Football takes care of itself. The ball, the lines on pitches, the grass, it’s all the same so it just down to us to get to know each other and get some good results for the club.

“The opportunity to come back and play some football is exciting. Myself and the family were always going to come back, and now I’m only ten minutes out the road which is great.

“I always think that if you’re happy in your personal life, football and work will follow suit so I’m happy to be back. The last time I played in the league my record spoke for itself.

“It’s going to be a challenge. We need everyone to stick together. The players, the management and the fans, if we all stick together we could have a very good year.

“I don’t think it’s unrealistic right now for us to set ourselves the target of Europe. It’s a long season so I don’t see why we shouldn’t be aiming for that. Hopefully, we can hit the ground running and get a good result on Friday.”

Alan Reynold’s men begin their 2020 Premier Division campaign with a trip to Richmond Park to take on St Patrick’s Athletic this Friday (kick-off 7.45pm).
