Athlone Town ramp up Women's National League preparations with three new signings

Athlone Town have announced the signing of three players as they continue to put their squad together for their first ever season in the Women’s National League.

Fiona Owens, Laura Mathews and Jessica Hennessy have all committed to The Town for the 2020 season.

Owens arrives at Athlone from current WNL champions Peamount United. The midfielder was involved with the senior team and was on the bench for the FAI Cup Final when United were beaten 3-2 by Wexford Youths.

She was an important member of the club’s WNL Under 17 side in 2019, they defeated Bohemians in the Shield Final but came up short against Galway in the Under 17 Cup Final.

Hennesy also played in the WNL at Under 17 level and was part of the Shelbourne side that was crowned league champions in 2018 when they defeated Galway in the final.

Mathews is a striker and moves to Athlone from Naas. She won the FAI Intermediate Cup with Boyne Rovers in 2016 and also played on the Kildare District Football League team that won the Angela Hearst Competition last year.
