Cork's Adam Idah's makes full Premier League debut at Old Trafford as Manchester United rout Norwich

Republic of Ireland under-21 striker Adam Idah made his full Premier League debut on a difficult afternoon for Norwich City as they lost 4-0 away to Manchester United.

The Corkman enjoyed a remarkable full debut for the Canaries seven days ago as he netted a hat-trick in the 4-2 FA Cup win over Preston North End at Deepdale.

18-year-old Idah bagged his first senior goal within two minutes, added a second from 35 yards before half time and then won the penalty leading to his hat-trick after the break.

That came following his Premier League bow as an injury-time substitute in the East Anglia club's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace a week earlier.

In the absence of injured top scorer Teemu Pukki and Josip Drmic, Idah was selected by manager Daniel Farke to lead the line at OId Trafford.

He last 64 minutes in the thankless task of sole striker role as goals from Marcus Rashford (x2), Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood saw the Red Devils to a facile victory.

The German had urged caution over the hype building behind the callow Idah, who has scored goals at every level of international football but remains inexperienced at senior level.

Irish supporters have seen a similar trend develop at Brighton & Hove Albion following Aaron Connolly’s brace against Tottenham Hotspur, but the Galway man has dealt with it well.

“It was great for Adam to get a hat-trick, but I don’t like the hype,” Farke told reporters during the week.

“It was his first game on this level. I was pleased with him but we didn’t win the Premier League. With all respect to Preston, they had made several changes in their defence.

“It’s a bit different facing [Harry] Maguire and [Victor] Lindelof. Quality is defined by performances over a long-term period, so that’s what Adam has to do.

“He’s not a quality striker after one FA Cup game.”
