Derry City sign Ireland under-21 winger Stephen Mallon on loan from Sheffield United

Derry City have signed Republic of Ireland under-21 winger Stephen Mallon on a six-month loan deal from English Premier League side Sheffield United.

Mallon, who spent the first half of last year on loan with Central Coast Mariners in Australia, follows in the footsteps of striker David Parkhouse who joined on loan from the Blades last season.

20-year-old Mallon is a regular member of Stephen Kenny’s under-21 squad and featured in the Toulon Tournament in the summer, in which Ireland reached the semi-finals for the first time.

The Belfast native previously represented Northern Ireland at youth level before making the switch to the Republic at under-17 level.

“David Parkhouse is a close friend and he spoke quite highly of the league and had a great time here,” said Mallon.

“When he came back, he put himself in a much better position than he was before, and that’s something I want to do myself. He’s come here and done well and he’s well thought-of.

“It’s a chance to work hard and get in the team. I know, coming across, nothing is promised. Hopefully I can get in the team, stay in the team, and hopefully we can get some success.”

Manager Declan Devine added: “He’s a talented boy, a guy I’ve known a long time. It’s a similar situation to the Parkhouse situation last season.

“He’s a very technical player, a flair player, a fantastic left foot and can play left midfield, left wing and can also fill in at left.

“He’s a player who’s seen the benefits of David Parkhouse last year, and he’s a guy that wants to prove himself at the highest level. He’s going to be a great addition for us.”
