Shamrock Rovers II set to take part in the 2020 First Division

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have confirmed that Shamrock Rovers II have been permitted to take their place in the 2020 First Division.

News of the Hoops second-string’s admittance to the second tier comes amid the backdrop of strong opposition to the proposal in recent weeks.

A statement from the FAI reads; “Shamrock Rovers II have been accepted into the SSE Airtricity League First Division for the 2020 season.

“The National League Executive Committee approved the proposal and the decision was ratified by the FAI Board.”

This is of course not the first time that Shamrock Rovers have entered a second string team into the First Division.

Back in 2014, the Hoops took part in the First Division – a year that saw Longford Town win promotion to the top-flight.

While in the First Division, ‘Rovers B’ as they were known finished in 6th position, picking up 26 points from 28 games.
