Conor Coventry extends stay at West Ham United

Republic of Ireland under-21 international Conor Coventry has signed a new contract with West Ham United.

There was some speculation of the 19-year-old player moving on from the London club that he has been with since 10 years of age. There were plenty of suitors looking to sign him up especially as his existing deal with the Premier League club was ending at the end of this season.

However, the Hammers have secured the services of the player now until the summer of 2023.

He signed his first pro contract with West Ham back in 2017 and made his first-team debut last season – as a substitute in the Carabao Cup clash against Macclesfield Town. Last year he also regularly captained the Hammers’ Under-23 side.

Back in August he earned his second appearance for the first team in the Carabao Cup win over Newport County and he has been an unused substitute with West Ham in the Premier League a handful of times in this campaign.

Coventry has been an impressive part of Stephen Kenny’s under-21 Ireland team who have had such a good campaign so far in their attempt to qualify for next year’s UEFA European U21 Championships.

“It’s a very proud day for me, and obviously something I’ve dreamed of since I came to the Club at ten-years-old,” said Coventy speaking to whufc.com.

“I first came to the Club as a kid and now I’ve become a man. I want to play in the first team for West Ham United. That’s what I’ve signed the contract to do, so hopefully in the next coming years I can be a first-team player for West Ham.”

Academy Manager Ricky Martin added: “He’s a fantastic young player, but also a great person who takes his career very seriously and leads by example on and off the pitch. That’s testament to him, to his professionalism, to his commitment and his dedication.”

New Hammers boss David Moyes may choose to move the player out on loan to gain some valuable first team experience.
