Terry Butler departs Athlone by mutual consent

First Division Athlone Town have confirmed that manager Terry Butler has left the club after an eighteen month spell in charge at Lissywoolen.

Butler took over the reins of the Midlander’s following the exit of previous boss Aaron Callaghan, who left the club in May 2018.

Since taking over as permanent boss, Butler was tasked with a rebuild of sorts at the Co. Westmeath club, as he steered his side off the bottom of the First Division table in 2019.

Following Limerick’s points deduction, Athlone came in 8th position in the 2019 league standings, with 18 points to their name.

The former Bohemians assistant boss’ final game in charge of Athlone was in the Leinster Senior Cup final, as a young St Patrick’s Athletic swept aside the challenge of the Blue and Black of the Midlands by four goals to nil.

Assistant Mitch Whitty and first team coach Aaron Shanahan have also both departed the club in light of Butler’s exit.

A statement from Athlone Town AFC reads; “Athlone Town AFC can confirm that Terry Butler has left the club by mutual consent after eighteen months in charge.

“The club would like to thank Terry, and his team of Mitch Whitty and Aaron Shanahan, for the time, effort and commitment they have given to improving our Senior Team and everyone at the club wishes them all the best for the future.

“The club should be in a position to announce the new management team very shortly and, having completed the installation of a 4G Astro Turf pitch earlier this year, will now look to consolidate all football activity at the Athlone Town Stadium.

“Once the position has been filled the new manager will expand on the future plans for the Senior Team.”
