WFAI Cup Final Preview: Peamount United -v- Wexford Youths

Fresh from winning the Women’s National League, James O’Callaghan’s Peamount United face Tom Elmes’ Wexford Youths in a repeat of last year’s final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday afternoon (kick-off is at 7.45pm).

Peas were defeated in last year’s decider by a solitary goal from Katrina Parrock in the first-half despite a late avalanche of chances for O’Callaghan’s side.

Speaking ahead of the game with RTE Sport, Republic of Ireland international Aine O’Gorman is hoping that her side can right the wrongs of last years defeat.

“We were really disappointed with last year. It’s a completely different experience. We didn’t adapt to the game as quick as we should.

“It was a great experience for us being here and realising how big the pitch is, so we are hoping to use that to our advantage this year," O'Gorman added. 

“We were a little unfortunate the way we conceded, and we didn’t convert our chances. We are looking to reverse that this year and use a little composure.

“We want to go out and enjoy the occasion and hopefully come out with the right result."

“It’s important to get as many people in as we can to watch," she said. Hopefully ourselves and Wexford can put on good display and make everyone want to keep coming to watch.”

Peamount have not released team news ahead of Sunday’s decider at the Aviva Stadium.

WEXFORD YOUTHS

After a disappointing league campaign, Wexford Youths make the trip to the Aviva Stadium to face Peamount United in a repeat of last year’s WFAI Cup decider.

Wexford came third in the Women’s National League, falling a fair distance behind eventual top two Shelbourne and Peamount.

However, the cup offers a chance of salvation for Elmes’ side – with McKenna Davidson admitting that she is relishing another chance to play at the Aviva Stadium.

“The whole team is excited,” Davidson told extratime.ie.  

“It has obviously been a little bit of a disappointing season as far as wins go for us.

“I don’t think we’ve got the results that I think we deserved but we have a chance to end our season on a high and it’s definitely exciting to play at the Aviva.

“It has been a disappointing year, so we have everything to play for and absolutely nothing to lose this weekend.

“I think we’re going to go into the game with the mindset that Peamount are a great side, everybody knows that, and we have a lot of work to do.

“It is not going to be easy, but I think that can be said for both sides. It won’t be easy for Peamount either.

“It would mean the world to us if win with a bit of a disappointing season for us – even as far as Champions League. We didn’t make it through because of one game so it would be great to end the season on a high.”

James O’Callaghan’s Peas have only fallen to defeat twice all season – against Shelbourne on both occasions in both the league and WNL Cup.
